Greenpeace International genomför tre månader lång resa till tidigare outforskade Weddelhavet i Antarktis. Ombord och ledare för den globala kampanjen finns svenska Frida Bengtsson. Skeppet kommer att genomföra forskning, i världens kallaste vatten, tillsammans med världskända polarforskaren Susanne Lockhart.
Susanne Lockhart (California Academy of Sciences) – benthic specialist, who has worked for NOAA (US Govt), contributed to the FAO (UN) and been involved in CCAMLR (Antarctic Governance).
Susanne’s work has been used by a host of international agencies to provide data in decision-making around the designation of Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems, specifically in the Antarctic, working with the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). CCAMLR is the international body responsible for governing the Antarctic waters and which will make the final decision on whether or not to approve the new Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary in the Weddell Sea.

Forskarna kommer att dyka med ubåtar och ta undervattensbilder från det oerhört känsliga marina ekosystemet i Weddellhavet som aldrig tidigare blivit undersökt. Detta är i områden med den högsta mångfalden av pingvinarter i Antarktis och där de största populationerna av krill finns.
Skeppet är redo att identifiera eventuella nya arter som kan upptäckas genom undervattensforskningen. All dokumentation kommer att lämnas in till den Antarktiska havskommissionen för att stärka anledningarna för att skydda detta område.
Weddellhavet är aktuellt eftersom den Antarktiska havskommissionen CCAMLR (Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources) på den tyska delegationens initiativ ska ta ställning till om det här området ska bli världens största skyddade område i höst. Det skyddade området blir då fyra gånger Sveriges storlek.
Greenpeace kommer vara i Antarktis fram till april i år och kontinuerligt rapportera från skeppsturen och de upptäckter som görs. Flera stora internationella mediehus kommer finnas ombord och kända internationella personer som kommer finnas ombord kommer annonseras inom kort.
