Efter placeringarna 15 och 4 natten till lördag svensk tid så ligger svenska OS-guldmedaljören Max Salminen 4:a inför det avslutande medaljracet på VM i Finnjolle i Auckland, Nya Zeeland. Imorgon slåss han mot sex andra seglare om silver och bronsmedaljerna men hur det än går har Max gjort sitt bästa VM i klassen. Britten Giles Scott har redan vunnit sin tredje raka VM titel.
Max kommenterar dagen så här:
– Även om jag är nöjd med mina resultat idag tycker jag att jag blev hårt straffad av ett misstag vid första kryssrundningen i första delseglingen. Men jag lyckades segla upp mig igen till en 15:e plats, poäng som kommer vara mycket viktiga imorgon. Andra racet lärde jag mig av mitt misstag och slutade på en stabil fjärde plats.
På frågan om strategin inför finalen säger Max:
– Jag ligger på en fjärdeplats med chans på allt mellan silver och sjundeplats. “Plan A” är självklart att gå efter medalj, men det förväntas riktigt lätt vind imorgon så man får hålla ett öga på dem bakom.
Max coach Dayne Sharp, som växte upp just i Auckland hade följande att säga om dagen:
– The land breeze of 12-18 knots proved extremely challenging racing. It placed a big emphasis on getting clean starts and sailing fast into the shifting winds. From two good race starts Max was able to use his speed and techniques to be in strong positions on the first windward legs of each race. However missing a big shift on the approach to the top mark in race one saw Max drop to 37th at the rounding. For the remainder of the race Max sailed through the fleet to finish 15th. A good result considering.
– Race two Max worked the shifts well to round mark one in 4th and stayed there for rest of the race. This performance showed his potential to mix it at the top of fleet, all the time gaining confidence with his knowledge and strategies, particularly after a very good day yesterday. It is satisfying to see consistency in Max’s performance, with improvements in small but important areas of his racing. One such area we have been focusing on is starting and the first 1/3 of the windward leg, to work into a position that comes to be a gain later in the race. This has been going well.
Dayne säger följande om söndagens avslutning:
– For the medal race, it will be about learning how to deal with the scoreboard pressure. As there is an opportunity to take a medal, the focus will be about doing the best without the distraction of the of the other competitors.
– For Max to have a chance to medal he must continue with executing the simple things really well. If he can do this just a little bit better than his opponents then anything could happen, and it may not be clear before the last few meters of the race.
